What are smart shades?
Smart shades let you operate window coverings from a wall keypad, a handheld remote, a smartphone, or an automation schedule — without ever pulling a cord. Modern motors are quiet, integrated into the architecture rather than sitting visibly above the window, and run on either hardwired power (for new construction) or rechargeable batteries (for retrofit).
The shades sit on a control system that connects them to the rest of the home — lighting scenes, climate, audio, and security — so they can respond to what’s happening rather than just to a manual command.
Why specify smart shades?
Privacy and security. Automated schedules create the appearance of occupancy when you’re away. Shades close at sunset whether you’re home or not.
Glare and heat management. South- and west-facing rooms get unbearable in summer afternoons. A shade that closes automatically when sunlight hits a certain threshold protects the room — and your furniture — without anyone thinking about it.
Light and ambience. Layered with lighting scenes, shades become part of the room’s visual rhythm. Morning scene: shades open, light comes up. Movie scene: drapes close, lights dim, blackout shade engages. The transitions feel inevitable.
Energy efficiency. Integrated shades reduce HVAC load. Combined with smart climate control, the savings add up over time.
What to look for
Not all motorised shades are equal. The differences matter:
- Quiet motors. Lutron’s shading motors run at under 44 dBA — quieter than ambient room noise. Cheaper systems use motors you can hear from the next room.
- Integration with the broader system. A shade that only works on its own app is half a shade. Look for systems that integrate with Lutron HomeWorks, Crestron, or whatever control platform you’re using.
- Manufacturer warranty. Crestron’s motorised drapery hardware comes with a limited lifetime warranty. Lutron’s shading line is similarly robust. The bargain options usually skip the warranty.
- Mounting hardware. Quality systems include drapery pockets, recessed valances, and side channels designed to disappear into the architecture. Bargain systems are obvious additions to the room.
What we install
Wenner specifies and installs Lutron and Crestron motorised shading and drapery across Vancouver Island. Both platforms integrate with the rest of the home’s control system. We coordinate fabric selection with your interior designer’s specification — the goal is shades that disappear into the room rather than announce themselves.
Conclusion
Smart shades are no longer a luxury upgrade — they’re a standard part of any thoughtful luxury build. Specified well, they integrate cleanly with the architecture and the broader control system. Specified poorly, they look like an aftermarket add-on. The difference is in the engineering at the design stage.
